I was going to write something about the history of Valentine’s Day and the tradition in the Netherlands and then I started to play around with AI.. and I changed my mind; this is so much funnier…🤣

Different than in the US, in the Netherlands, Valentine's Day is pretty low-key. While in the US people go all out with roses, chocolates and dinners, the Dutch tend to keep it simple or don’t celebrate at all. They may send a card, or bring some flowers home, but it's not as commercialized as in the US. It's more about showing love and appreciation to your partner, friends, and family in a simple way.

Then I went ahead and asked AI to give me Dutch Valentine’s Day gift ideas, just to see what would come up. You don’t have to know much about the Netherlands, to know that this answer is quite funny….. Trust me, it’s unredacted with some colorful comments from myself.

Here are some sweet Dutch Valentine's Day gift ideas:

(spiced cookies) – This is AI just being plain stupid. These goodies we eat with Sinterklaas, the Dutch equivalent of Christmas – widely celebrated, a big tradition – If you live by AI, maybe you can give your loved ones a gingerbread house this Valentin’s Day? Lol, it actually may be hit, because they will never forget.

- A bouquet of flowers, especially tulips! – Tulips… Yes we all know, they are Dutch, but they flower in spring .. you will end up pretty empty handed in Feb!

- A cozy dinner at home with Dutch treats like stamppot or poffertjes –
Oh my… stamppot.. Yes, it’s a traditional (read: old fashion) Dutch dish with mashed potatoes to feed the masses cheap. And poffertjes, trust me, even the Dutchies don’t eat these for dinner. 🤷♂️

- A handmade card or gift, like a *Delfts blauwe* (Delft blue) ceramic –
Not even sure what to say about this. Yes, it’s Dutch and in my grandmother’s fine china cabinet maybe.

- A relaxing couples' spa day – I can only say one thing about this; I wished! I don’t think any of my Dutch friends every went on a “couple spa day” and just to throw it out there… spa wear in the Netherlands is your birthday suite… Feeling it? Romantic? 👎
